Our Wedding Day
People often say that their wedding day is the best day of their life. On the one hand, there is no other time in your life when everyone you love is physically located in the same place. And your funeral doesn’t count because hopefully you outlive enough people that your funeral is sparsely attended. On the other hand, I always wondered if people say their wedding is the best day because considering the amount of time and money spent to make that one day epic, you are determined to make it the best day ever, despite the flowers getting delivered late, the aunt who never smiles for photos and the wasted friend who makes a fool of themselves on the dance floor.
I didn’t want my wedding day to be the best day of my life because that would mean that nothing was waiting on the other side that could compare. Considering my wedding day would not feature my Dad, the person most excited to host this event, it was hard to imagine it being the perfect day. My approach was to hope that our wedding would be the best party we would ever throw. I could live the rest of my life having already thrown the best party of my life.
The level of detail I could go into here could be a short novel, from the perfect dress, to the joy of getting ready with my Mom, from first looks with Sung to living on the dance floor until closing time. But I’ll distill it down to what matters. We truly were surrounded by all of the people in our lives who made us who we are today, who lift us up, who support us, and who cheer for us to be happy together. And to treat those 100 people to great food, a fun photobooth, and strictly booty shaking hits would be enough to make me smile, but I was already smiling honoring my Dad with this great party, dancing with my Mom and looking into Sung’s eyes knowing I made a good choice to team up with him.
You can’t wake up and choose to be happy. You can surround yourself with what makes you happy and choose to put yourself in those surroundings as often as possible. And that is why your wedding day can be one of your best days, because hopefully you are surrounding yourself with people who contribute to your overall happiness.
